Here are 5 great books to help kids through divorce. These books address the emotional overwhelm that many children experience during a divorce and gives a perspective about living in two homes that is easy to understand.

This is a really good read and topped our list of great books to help kids through divorce. In a simple way, Two Homes highlights the subtle differences in mommy and daddy’s homes, providing a sense of comfort to kids that says it is alright that things are changing.

What we really love about this book is the colorful illustrations that portray positivity and happiness even during a divorce. Teach kids how to embrace change and transition while coping and managing with their emotions.

2. Dinosaurs Divorce

Because dinosaurs get divorced too! 

This is an interesting way of helping children understand how families change during a divorce. It addresses many very common concerns like having two homes, meeting new friends and interests, and coping with having an extended family. Great and simple to understand, this book has been around awhile and has remained a favorite in single parent homes.

3. Standing On My Own Two Feet

We all love a good book that teaches children about positive affirmations. Standing On My Own Two Feet does just that.

A lovely illustrated book about Addison who goes through his parents’ divorce. The key takeaway is that he knows his parents will always love him and this love is what carries him through this emotional journey. A heartwarming story that helps children stand strong on their own feet.

The confusion that children are made to experience during a divorce can be daunting and detrimental to how they cope and manage through the transition. Koko Bear knows exactly how this feels like.

This is a touching book that explains why divorce happens and how things change when one parent has to move out. It was one of the first books we read and we found it to be very comprehensive for young children. It re-enforces that children have no blame when parents divorce and provides the support needed to understand the process.

5.  My Family’s Changing

This book is written by a psychotherapist and counselor, which gives it a lot of insight into the minds of children going through the transitions that occur during a divorce. The book prompts children to consider how they feel and reflect on their emotions – a much-needed experience among our youths today.

We liked that it addresses the fears and doubts that spiral through the minds of our children during this difficult time. On top of that, the illustrations make the book very appealing to children of all ages.
